Movie Night @ The Hilt - Anora

Sean Baker's Anora (2024) is a genre-defying tragicomedy that reimagines the Cinderella story through a gritty, contemporary lens. The film follows Ani, a Brooklyn stripper portrayed by Mikey Madison, who impulsively marries Vanya, the immature son of a Russian oligarch. Their whirlwind romance quickly unravels as Ani confronts the harsh realities of her new life, leading to a narrative that oscillates between screwball comedy and poignant drama.

Critics have lauded Anora for its sharp commentary on class disparity and the illusions of the American Dream. The Guardian describes it as a "violent corrective to so many Hollywood fairytales," highlighting its ability to blend humor with a sobering dose of reality . Mikey Madison's performance has been particularly praised, with some suggesting it could be Oscar-worthy.

The film's success is underscored by its accolades, including winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93% and a Metacritic score of 91, Anora stands out as a compelling, emotionally resonant film that challenges traditional romantic narratives while offering a fresh, unflinching look at contemporary society
